Since this bad boy was amongst my presents at Christmas...
...I NEED to learn and WANT to learn to be crafty. I want to sew, I want to applique, I want just do something with my "down" time besides TV or...nothing. I've got so many ideas swimming in my head...but in all actuality I really wonder if I can "learn" to be crafty? Is it just something that comes second nature or can I talk myself into thinking I really know what I'm doing?! Let's face the true reality,...I do not even know how to sew a button on. Wait, back up, I've actually never tried so I really don't know if I don't know how...or if the idea of trying just freaks me out a bit.
I learned to sew wayyyy back in my 4-H days and sewed a few dresses but all of that is far gone from my memory. Good news is: the machine is out of the box. Bad news: I haven't even unwrapped the "factory-wrapped" cord. Probably should whip that thing out and start on SOMETHING. First things first, I should probably go to the store and buy thread, material and scissors. That's the basics right?! Maybe tomorrow calls for a trip into town to purchase. I'm a tad bit nervous but also excited to learn new things!
I am signing up for a BASIC sewing class at Joanns -- 2 pieces of good news with that info: it's 50% off their classes this month AND you can bring your own machine! I'm thrilled. My friend, Hollie, and I are headed there together. Hopefully not to be humiliated. Just as we discussed this morning that we hope it is truly a BASIC class. B.A.S.I.C.
I did, however, just purchase the cutest Valentine's Day applique template that I want to play around with. Maybe Reese will be sporting some of her mommy's goods come Feb 14,...then again, maybe now. We'll see. I must make that trip to buy the said goods though first.
Part of the reason for this blog is for accountability. I need someone to say in, let's say, 2 months...."Hey Jobeth, how's that sewing going?" I need to be able to say "I LOVE IT! and here's what I've made!"
Here's to new adventures in 2011!! Wish me luck :)

I want to learn to sew too. I want to be able to say "I made it" when someone asks where Olivia's cute clothes came from. My mom is going to teach me since she has the crafty gene in our family, I think it skips a generation:) Good luck!!
I feel the same way. I got a machine for christmas too and mine isn't even out of the box. I am planning on buying cheap fabric to start out with. That is what eveyone is telling me I should do anyway. I am going to start with simple things like a table runner, cloth napkins, etc. Then I'll move on to curtains and pillows. We will see! So I know exactly what your thinking! Have fun in the class, I have heard it is helpful.
Post things as you make them too, that will help you out!
Can I join your class?? Seriously, no joke. When does it start? I've got you beat... I got a machine for my anniversary in October. That sucker is still in the "factory wrapped" package. I haven't even opened it. :( Sad, sad fact.
Good luck...Maybe 2011 will bring more girl trips:-) miss you!
Proud of you JoBeth - first, don't get discouraged when it doesn't turn out just like you want... everyone learned this way second, start out with Easy projects .. cuts down on the disappointments

I got a sewing machine for christmas too!!! I hadn't sewed since middle school, but it all came back! I just went to JoAnne's 2 weeks ago ... buy a PATTERN! It gives you directions ... ANNNND ask the people at JoAnne's what supplies you will need, they were so helpful to me. I also just signed up for the 50% off class at JoAnnes, but I am taking the quilting class. Good luck ... and have FUN! I just made 2 aprons last week ... once you get the hang out it, it's SUPER easy!
Love the new sewing machine. I think you can learn to be crafty. Dream up something you've seen that you want to try to make and then google up directions, or at least that's what I do. To be truthful, I do often talk myself out of projects though, if they look too tough...
I can't wait to read how the sewing class goes.
